I accepted this challenge as my summer job for 2008. These 14 panels celebrate not only a cross section of several sports but also several cultures and differences in our school. Beginning after school and weekends in May, 2008 and most of July and August finishing just a week before the new school year began in September, 2008 and 265 hours, these pictures give you a look at the results of my labour. The painting on each panel is approximately 3 metres high by 1.3 metres wide.
In this "Cross Country Running" panel, all runners were, at the time, students attending Dr. J. C. Wickwire. Most of the children depicted were 'Generic', but in all, eight Wickwire' students are depicted among the panels including , hockey, baseball and gymnastics.
During this "Work of Love" several students had the opportunity to help with the actual painting, under my supervision. Those students who enjoyed putting their artistic talents to work, signed their names and added their hand print to the panels they helped paint.
I must admit that this was, by far, the BEST summer job I have ever had and would gladly accept other commissions to do more of the same.
I was asked if I wold take on this task after completing two other murals, on a smaller scale, in Dr. J.C. Wickwire. The first mural is in the office and celebrates First Nation's people watching arrival of 'New People' from across the ocean. The second mural is outside the door of our gym, celebrating African Nova Scotians with a larger than life painting of our local Canadian Boxing Champion, Tiger Warrington.
I must admit that I am pround of these acheivements and at times am more than a little overwhelmed to realize that I did indeed complete these paintings.
I truly hope that these paintings will be enjoyed, for many years, at least half as much as I enjoyed painting them.
